in an effort to truly recognize the simple pleasures in my life, i have compiled a list of random happenings that made the last seven days a lot brighter. (& trust me, they were all very much appreciated.)
Fireworks, Hot Dogs & Independence. Even though my neighbors have been observing the holiday for the last week, I will begin today. I enjoy traditions of the 4th no matter the sunny & sultry weather, but today’s 70-something degree high is absolutely perfect for a six mile route downtown, food truck friday, fireworks with the rest of the circle & hot dogs, always hot dogs. Enjoy your time with family & friends, I know i’ll be doing the same!

Mama’s cinnamon rolls. at the end of the day/week/month, nothing feels like home more than eating one of my mother’s made-from-scratch cinnamon rolls. they’ve been apart of our holiday celebrations for years, but when a pan spontaneously gets pulled from the freezer, that’s where it’s at.
Indiana. finally, finally. #LoveIsLove.
NBA. during last night’s draft, Commissioner Adam Silver did something really great for Isaiah Austin and i couldn’t help but get teary eyed.
New babies. my dear friend, Lauren, had a baby boy, Elliot Asher, on Sunday & my heart is so happy for her & her husband. the excitement when i receive a “(s)he’s here!” text never gets old.
Pour-over coffee. i threw away my beloved Keurig machine & replaced it with one of Starbucks’ pour-over designs. one week in & i am in love. plus, the simplicity of the design that sits atop my counter-top can’t be beat.

Catfish. something about this show makes my life seem somewhat sane. i can’t believe there are people who still don’t know how to properly stalk on Google, but their mysterious lives make for great entertainment.
KitchenAid Mixer. everyday, i see the mixer on my countertop & yet, until this week, it’s been neglected for weeks & weeks. sometimes i get a hankering to bake & i’m pretty sure my office had no complaints.
Pulled pork egg rolls. an impromptu date led to a drink & appetizers at Moe & Johnny’s. i had no idea what these were going to taste like, but they exceeded all expectations.
Salted Chocolate Caramel Milkshake. the Dairy Bar at the state fair has always been a favorite, and obviously this year, the location holds a different meaning. we revealed this year’s milkshake flavor at the Fastest Rookie Luncheon but starting Monday, we’ll be in the running to make our shake & Coliseum Grilled Cheese the signature food at the fair.
Vodka. i’ll forever be a wine & beer kind of gal, but i reunited with my college love, Vodka, last weekend & given the amount of Vodka i latched onto in my early 20s, even i am shocked at how easily it went down.

Air-Tan. i stopped fake baking when i was 21. i’m not sure why i ever started (well, besides being in high school & convincing myself it was necessary), but i’m glad i stopped. now, when i need a little color, i turn to the crew at Air-Tan. it’s a 15 minute stop that leaves me with a nice, bronze glow. granted, the typical “fake tan” smell does exist until a couple of showers, but the color is natural & healthy—so worth it.
Gobstoppers. they remind me of childhood…gobstoppers & jaw breakers mixed with fresh &/or frozen red vines.
Rent the Runway. as a seasoned online shopper, i can’t believe it took me this long to try out RTR, but i will say, with an event tonight, i am so glad i finally did. considering i did not have a “black tie” dress hanging in my closet and was unwilling to spend $$$ on a dress, i opted to rent. the dresses arrived Monday night & i am tickled pink—literally, the dresses are pink. got an event in the future? give RTR a try! (<—R.Link)
Screen doors. sure i could’ve spent a couple hundred dollars on an ornate screen door, but why do that when the $40 version serves the same purpose? (also, i’d rather have shoes.) my love affair with my deck was already going strong— the screen door renewed it this week.
Shep shirts. never one to turn away an opportunity to embrace a lifestyle, i’ve fully embraced the Vineyard Vines way of life—well, at least their shep shirts. a couple months ago, Meg recommended a couple that i couldn’t refuse, and now, they’ve been my go-to.

Chop, chop. my hair was in desperate need of a fresh cut. thanks to a new recommendation (& my new favorite hair guy), my hair is all set for summer. i, however, am in denial that i chopped off four inches.
Contract renewals. it’s that time of year when we start signing new contracts and renewing others. it’s naturally an exciting time— new people, new outlooks, new adventures— can’t go wrong there.
Cow Tales. when i was up at our national office a few weeks back, there were Cow Tales scattered on all the tables. until that 3-day stint of meetings, I had never before tried a Cow Tale. since then, they’ve become our go-to for gift basket fillers. only in the dairy industry would we find this treat oh, so charming.
Dark denim. in the last week, i’ve tried on 5 different white denim styles/brands & while i think i may have finally found a winner, i’ll be sticking to my beloved dark denim, just in case.
National Donut Day. i never need an excuse to eat a donut, but today’s national celebration justifies any extra calorie i’ll consume. plus, around Indy, there are 10+ donut shops also celebrating the occasion. give me all the maple!

in an effort to truly recognize the simple pleasures in my life, i have compiled a list of random happenings that made the last seven days a lot brighter. (& trust me, they were all very much appreciated.)
Bentley. we had a sleepover last night & my heart is happy. besides her barking up a storm at my neighbor, she’s the sweetest thing i know. & after 9 years, i’m more thankful for the little furball today than ever before.
Catfish. it’s too dirty not to be good. it’s my guiltiest of guilty pleasures & i can’t stop watching.
Indy 500. the month of May is always a wonderful time to visit our fair city, and the Indy 500 is the cherry on top of a month-long celebration. With the Mini-Marathon that kicks it all off, the Fastest Rookie Lunch celebrating the newest drivers on the track, the Zoopolis 500 encouraging kiddos to soak up the spirit, and the 500 Festival Parade featuring local celebrities & Olympic athletes, there’s always something to do. i have lived in Indiana since 1993 and no previous month of May can compare to the one i just experienced. i am so grateful to be apart of so many great celebrations, but more than that, i’m grateful to represent an industry formed by some of the hardest working individuals i know.
Iggy Azalea. “Fancy" is good but the whole album is pretty great.
[the conclusion of hype surrounding] Kimye’s wedding. …
NYPost. nailed it.
Samuel Adams Beers of Summer. a few ladies from the office came over last night to celebrate the conclusion of all May activities. we had to cheers with something and the blueberry lager was the way to go!
Sara Bareilles “I choose you.” It’s become my go-to car karaoke song, but the message isn’t too bad either.

From a cow to a race car driver, this is my life. I’ll be blunt, I don’t have time to write a list for this week’s “Weekly Gratitude.” Life is great, in fact it’s chaotically quite perfect. This week has tested my exhaustion levels, it’s challenged me to step into a more professional role, and it has encouraged me to do more—for myself and for others. Every night that I’ve gone to bed and plunked my head onto my pillow, i’ve felt good about the events prior to. My morning’s have started well before sunrise and they’ve ended well after the sun has set. Today will be much the same. As our staff has been celebrating the dairy industry and its role in the Indianapolis 500 (practice, poles, rookies, tortoises), we’ve been honored to be apart of such great events. I am so proud to work for the dairy farmers of Indiana and i really hope you’ll take a few minutes out of your day to watch the following three videos. This is about tradition, this is about family, and this is about representing an industry near and dear to my heart.
The tradition of milk at the Indianapolis 500
Rookie milkman, Alan Wright, shares his Indy 500 story and how dairy farming, for him, is not only a passion, but a dream.
Ken Hoeing, the milkman who will present the bottle of milk to the winning driver in Victory Circle, talks about his family’s dairy legacy.

in an effort to truly recognize the simple pleasures in my life, i have compiled a list of random happenings that made the last seven days a lot brighter. (& trust me, they were all very much appreciated.)
Emel's Beet Salad. technically, it’s not Emel’s salad, but she brought it to last Friday’s cook-out and i was a fan. to be honest, i’m not a huge beet/goat cheese fan, but this salad, with the arugula and yummy dressing, was a big hit.
English Muffins. i tend to get on food kicks where i eat one food over and over and over and over. after the events of Monday, the only thing i’ve been truly craving has been Nooks & Crannies of breaded goodness. odd craving? maybe. but so deliciously simple. have you tried Wolferman’s? dead.
Fresca. given my love of Diet Coke, i often forget about my favorite clear, carbonated beverages [that pretty much kept the flame buring for my love of vodka during my college years].
Ryan Gosling & Macaulay Culkin. for obvious reasons, R.Gos brings infinite joy into my life, but between his pajama escapade on Ellen a few years back & his most recent charade with the Home Alone star, he’s even more charming than i thought he was a week ago. plus, can we talk about his relationship with the beautiful Eva Mendes? perfection.
Snapchat. nothing brightens my day more than the random Snapchats I receive from faces all around the country. let’s be friends (brookemschultz).
Spin pins. still my go-to for the inevitable top-knot that appears at least two days a week.

in an effort to truly recognize the simple pleasures in my life, i have compiled a list of random happenings that made the last seven days a lot brighter. (& trust me, they were all very much appreciated.)
my Deck. on Wednesday night, i sat outside while grading and couldn’t help but be thankful for an outdoor living space. given the deck was built by my dad & brother, i know how much work went into the deck which makes the experience even more meaningful. plus, any opportunity to accessorize is always a great one.
#GoldSwagger. i’d be remiss not to mention our beloved Pacers! while the past has been a little rocky, it’s always fun to watch a team finally do well [despite rumors of marital affairs, babies, etc etc etc.]. i remember the year Boom Baby was coined & it’s been a good ride ever since.
Race month. it’s officially race month in Indy, and given the tradition of milk at the end of the Indy 500, it’s going to be a busy month! for the first time since moving to Indianapolis in 1993, i’ll be making Speedway my second home on a handful of occasions. a part of me would like to fully commit to the race day culture, but a part of me would like to participate in the glamping side instead. we’ll see how this all plays out.
Scotty McCreery. i realize he’s only 14, but i can’t get his latest single out of my head. plus, those eyes.
Square Donuts. a fixture in the downtown market, Emel & i have long talked about our yearning to try out their donuts, but oddly enough, they’re closed on Sundays— a prime donut for breakfast day of the week. fortunately, Mama discovered they transport donuts to the northside during the week, & therefore, i can report that they are, in fact, delicious.
Stitch Fix. thanks to a Klout perk, i experienced my first Stitch Fix and I have to say, I am quite pleased. while i didn’t keep all 5 items, I did keep a dress that will be worn to the Fastest Rookie Luncheon, a pretty huge event for our office and dairy farmers.

in an effort to truly recognize the simple pleasures in my life, i have compiled a list of random happenings that made the last seven days a lot brighter. (& trust me, they were all very much appreciated.)
Capital Grille. after a 13 hour day, nothing seemed better than sneaking away, scooting into a leather booth & savoring a cup of lobster bisque. until Tuesday night, i had never been to a Capital Grille, but i know now, i’ll be going back.
Coal oven pizza. the thin crust, the fresh ingredients, the fluffiness of riccota cheese. if you have a Tony Sacco's near you, you must give it a go.
Crowne Plaza. for three solid days this week, Crown Plaza was my home away from home. between the feather topped bed, the delicious Starbucks/Wolfgang Puck’s coffee, the kindest of crews & the catered breakfast burritos that we’re still talking about, i can’t say enough great things about this O’Hare treasure.
Fuel Up to Play 60. i’ve said it before and i’m sure i’ll say it again, i am so proud to be apart of this initiative & the three days of meetings i endured this week further affirm that sentiment.
Jimmy Fallon & Emma Stone lip sync. slayed it.
Maybelline eye make-up remover. i’d look like a raccoon without it. this gel formula feels like cool cucumbers on my eyes every evening. it’s the only thing that takes everything off & doesn’t disturb my delicate crow’s feet.
Nips. peculiar name for a candy brand, but worth it for the chocolate variety.

Hi! I'm Brooke. Indianapolis is my home & I welcome you to my little nook. I'm a twenty-something girl who was born in the land of corn (Okl.), attended undergrad in the true Sea of Red (Neb.), & eventually found her way back home again after picking up a couple letters behind her name (Kan.) while clinging to an adorable Maltipoo named Bentley. Thank you for stopping by & please feel free to leave a comment (or ask a question) under the "Be Kind" tab at the top... xo, B
