When did my shoe obsession take flight, you may ask?
I’d like to say a very early age, but the truth is,
My appreciation for sky high heels & Italian leather started at my first job when I was a shoe salesperson at good ole Kern Bros. Shoes in Zionsville, Indiana.
I was fifteen years old when I was taught how to stock a back room, how to properly measure a toddler’s foot, & how to adequately express my input on style, brand, & value.
It was a dream job at that time.
I worked at Kern Bros. with two of my best friends & as far as social activities were concerned,
being able to hand-select three or four pairs from the back room on any given weekend was pretty clutch!
My boss was (& still is) an amazing guy who understood that we were all just high school-aged girly girls who just wanted to have a good time while still acknowledging this was his family-owned & run business.
I worked there for a solid three years & have made a pretty good effort in the years since to buy some shoes from his diverse stock.
This last weekend, I stopped by to see what I could find.

Upon entering his store full of good character & charm,
I was welcomed with an enlightened “Brookey!” from across the room.
It was like coming home all over again.
I browsed the shelves, considered my options,
& ended up leaving with these leopard & clear-sequined Sperrys (& also placed an order for an adorable pair of neon pink Birkenstocks because I will always be a California-raised hipster at heart).
Sometimes it’s pretty great to be back where you grew up for the majority of your life,
& stopping in for shoes while supporting a favorite local business is definitely one of those times!
